Exploring The English Countryside

No matter how long you’re visiting London for it’s always a great idea to get out of the city and explore some of the English Countryside.

There are endless options that are just a short bus/train ride away from the bustling inner city. While we were visiting London we decided to visit Windsor Castle in Berkshire, about an hour out of the city.

Windsor Castle is an official royal residence in the English Countryside, with the Queen often visiting and hosting events there. We couldn’t believe our luck that we missed her by one day – she hosted a birthday party and parade at the castle one day before we were there.

This is why it’s always a good idea to keep up with the local news and events, I’m sure it would have been reported on in the lead up and we could have changed our plans to be there for it! Although, there would have been a million people there!

The castle was originally built in the 11th century after the invasion of England by William the Conqueror and since then has been used as military headquarters and a royal residence.

We caught the train from London Paddington Station to Windsor & Eton Riverside Station. The ride takes about an hour and can be paid of on an Oyster Card, or by buying an individual ticket.

There is a beautiful shopping complex – Windsor Royal Shopping – to have a look around when you arrive and grab some lunch. Narrow cobbled streets surround the castle, with cafes serving the perfect English tea, scones and cucumber sandwiches.

If castles aren’t really you’re thing there are plenty of other options for escaping the city and checking out more of England.

Check out Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge, Somerset or Hampshire for a quick getaway from the city.
