Kualoa is a family owned ranch on the east side of Oahu.
Established in 1850, Kualoa is still a working cattle ranch, stretching from the mountains to the ocean. The ranch is extremely popular for filming movies and TV shows, with Jurassic Park, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, 50 First Dates, LOST, and Hawaii Five-O all taking place amongst the mountains of Kualoa.
While we were staying on Oahu, we booked a full day tour of Kualoa Ranch, which included two activities whilst there, a beautiful buffet lunch, and hotel transfers.
ATV riding at Kualoa Ranch
For our first activity we chose to ATV around the ranch. Even the gloomy weather couldn’t dampen our spirits, we were excited to explore the beautiful grounds of the ranch. It was my first time on an ATV and I was nervous.
They were so heavy and hard to manoeuvre, and I can sometimes be a little bit uncoordinated. But once we got into the swing of it, it was awesome. We drove all around the ranch, with our guides stopping at different points to show us movie sites or historical aspects of the ranch.
Even offering beautiful views of the ocean, it was a great way to experience an ATV for the first time.
After a delicious buffet lunch we jumped in the bus to explore the Ka’a’awa Valley, also known as Hollywood’s Hawaiian Backlot on the Movie Locations Tour! An endless number of movies and TV shows have been filmed here, and they’ve preserved a few different parts of many of the most famous movies for you to check out on the tour.
The beauty of the valley allows for several different movies to be filmed in the same spot, without viewers being able to notice that they are all in the same place. One of the highlights was the dinosaur footprint that had been preserved there from Jurassic Park. It just looked so real!
On the way back we also got to explore a World War II army bunker, built entirely into the mountain range. It’s been converted into a kind of mini museum, with movie posters, props and memorabilia from the movies filmed at Kualoa Ranch, as well as incredible WWII artefacts and exhibits.
Kualoa Ranch includes so many different activities, including horseback riding, jungle tours, boat tours, secret island beach tours and zipline adventures. We chose our activities largely based on the weather that day (wasn’t really the right weather for a beach day), but we were so happy with our choices in the end. It allowed us to experience a completely different side of Hawaii and Oahu that was just as beautiful.
