Staying in a Costa Rican Treehouse

Our first home in Costa Rica was at Heliconias Nature Lodge, which was located about 20 minutes away from the La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano areas. The lodge has a unique vibe, making you feel right at home as soon as you arrive, which might be because the lodge is run by a local Costa Rican family.

They definitely make you feel right at home, like you’re part of the family as soon as you arrive. After our long transfer from SJO airport, we arrived in the dark and were shown up to our beautiful treehouse accommodation. We couldn’t wait to see it in the daylight!

Sleeping in a Treehouse

We booked a treehouse with a garden view for our stay, which was surrounded by trees and overlooking the gardens and the mountains that surrounded the lodge. The treehouse offered a great deal of privacy, located far enough away from each other that we never heard any of the other guests and the windows all faced away from each other.

From our treehouse window we could see out over the jungle and valley of La Fortuna. It was just beautiful and we could watch the sun rising each morning when we woke up. Our treehouse was also equipped with a full bathroom, so we didn’t have to worry about climbing down once we had settled in for the night.

Restaurant at Heliconias Nature Lodge

Due to the location of the property it is a little difficult to get into the main town unless you have a car. Luckily the onsite restaurant, which is just for the guests of the lodge, is absolutely outstanding. With a menu full of local delicacies and authentic Costa Rican dishes, there is always something new to try on the menu.

We ate quite a few meals at the restaurant on site, which were all absolutely amazing. Finding home-made style of food can be very difficult overseas, but Heliconias made it feel like Sunday dinner with the family every night. My recommendation would be the Cordon Bleu dish, superb!

The staff at the hotel were amazing, especially with email correspondence before we arrived, setting us up with airport transfers, answering all our questions and enquiries. We honestly couldn’t recommend them highly enough. The owner of the property even gave us a lift into the local airport on our last day! It really felt like our own little Costa Rican family.

From our research and experience there is not really an easy place to stay in La Fortuna that’s gives you a great accommodation experience and is still close to town.

We decided to choose a cute treehouse experience over convenience of being near the main street while we were in La Fortuna because we wanted to stay in some unique places for our honeymoon. It worked out wonderfully for us this time due to the onsite restaurant and their menu choices, but normally we would like to be closer to the main town so that we can get out and explore a bit.

Due to the location of Heliconias we weren’t really able to get out and explore like we normally would and really only left the resort for our day tours and pre-arranged excursions. If we were to visit La Fortuna again we would probably choose to rent a car so we weren’t so limited in what we could get out and do.
